Meals on Wheels helps to feed more than 3,500 homebound elderly and disabled across Western New York. While our daily meals address the nutritional needs of each recipient, caring for the emotional needs of our community members is just as important.
One way Meals on Wheels is more than just a food provider is by enabling volunteers and clients to form long-lasting friendships and also by remembering important dates in each recipient’s life. On birthdays, our volunteers deliver a dessert and small gift. For some, celebrating birthdays with family is difficult. Meals on Wheels ensures that everyone gets a warm, caring birthday greeting and our clients really appreciate it.

“You made my day yesterday. I’m not celebrating my 86thbirthday until today with family, so your visit yesterday was a pleasure. I had many calls and cards, but believe this was the most special part of my day. Thanks so much!”
Because so many clients and volunteers become close friends, volunteers singing “happy birthday” is a common occurrence. This letter of thanks shows the great appreciation for these simple gestures:
“I not only loved the mug you sent me, but the two gals who gave it to me sang happy birthday! They were wonderful! Thanks a million!”
Oftentimes, our recipients may not have other friends and family living in the Western New York area, so simple acts of kindness from Meals on Wheels volunteers may be the only recognition they get on special days.
“Everyone means so much to me and touches my heart in a special way. I love the delivery woman too! Very good, professional, loving, caring, concerned, very friendly, helpful. My volunteers talk to me, especially when I’m down and low; they care, especially when they are the only people I see all day, everyday! I have no more family (since 1995) and now all I have are my dog, fish, and turtles. Thank you and may the great spirit bless you all!”
Our volunteers do not only deliver food, but also bring with them a cheerful smile and help to make a lasting, personal impact on each recipient.
